Originally released in November of 2016, Cool Girls is a satirical web series created by Toronto-based comedy duo, Soup&LO (Sarah Campbell and Laura Commisso). Together, Laura and Sarah co-write, direct, produce, and edit the series, as well as play the two main characters.
In a mockumentary-style fashion, Cool Girls follows long time best friends, Amber-Mae and Terri-Lynn, as they set out to produce a series of “How To Guides” on lifestyle and leisure. As an online vlogger and aspiring social media influencer, Amber-Mae is confident, bold, and enormously vain. This, combined with Terri-Lynn’s hyperbolic social awkwardness, makes the two a disastrously perfect duo. Within their advice vlogs, they cover everything from beauty, food and wine, travel, social gatherings, and real-life drama.
Cool Girls is a humorous new take on today’s millennial generation and our obsession with being noticed and liked. Everything from our outfits to our breakfasts are well-thought-out, curated, and documented. Everything Amber-Mae does is for the purpose of impressing other people, and simply proving that she is in fact, cool. All the while, Terri-Lynn is trying desperately to keep up. Cool Girls is important because as outrageous and unreasonable as these two girls are, they are shockingly relatable. They are us today, clumsily navigating through a strange new world of self-branding and social-status upkeep. Not only does Amber and Terri’s partnership give us permission to step back and laugh at ourselves, it also reminds us that maybe we’re not so cool after all.
